Annual School Tax: $0.00

What is the school tax rate 2026?

The Quebec provincial government sets one school tax rate that applies uniformly across the entire province. In 2026, the Quebec government set the school tax rate to $0.08423 per $100 of assessed property value. This means the owners of a property with an assessed value of $500,000 will pay $421.15.

What is school tax

School tax is a Quebec property tax that is levied on building owners to finance the public education system. It is administered by the public school authority serving the territory where the property is located. This will be either a French-language School Service Centre (CSS) or an English-language school board. Whether you have children or not, if you own a property in Quebec, you will have to pay school tax.

How to calculate school tax

To calculate your school tax, you need to know three things:

  1. Your assessed value of the property
  2. The applicable school tax rate for the year

Once you have these inputs, you are able to calcuate the school tax as:

School tax = (Assessed value – $25,000) × (School tax rate / 100 )

Note: For residential properties, Quebec applies a basic school tax exemption of $25,000, meaning school tax is calculated only on the portion of the property’s assessed value that exceeds this amount. This exemption applies through the 2025–2026 school tax year.

Example calculation

Let’s say that you have a property in Montreal with an assessed value of $439,000. The school tax due on this property is:

(439,000 – 25,000) × (0.08423 / 100) = $348.71

Usually the municipality where you live will send you a bill once per year for your school tax.

Where to find your assessed value

The municipality where you live calculates the assessed value of your property and posts the result on their property assessment rolls. Below are the links to the assessment rolls for several Quebec municipalities:
